Tesla Model Y Launched in India: Price, Features and First Look

Tesla Model Y has finally hit the Indian roads and the first showroom has been opened in Mumbai’s posh Bandra Kurla Complex BKC. After years of waiting, rumours and social media buzz, Tesla officially entered India on July 15, 2025. The price starting at around ₹ 60 lakh may surprise some people but there is a big dream behind it – the introduction of luxury electric vehicles in India, environmental awareness and a glimpse of the future. Let’s find out what Tesla Model Y brings to India.

Two variants one bold launch

Tesla Model Y has been launched in India in two variants:

  1. Rear Wheel Drive RWD: Price ₹59.89 lakh, Range 500 km, 0 to 100 kmph in just 5.9 seconds.
  2. Long Range RWD: Price ₹67.89 lakh, Range 622 km, 0 to 100 kmph in just 5.6 seconds.

Blend of design, comfort and technology

The interior of the Tesla Model Y is minimalist and modern. A 15.4-inch touchscreen is centrally placed on the dashboard, which controls almost all the features of the car. There is also an 8-inch screen for the rear passengers, which keeps the entertainment going.

The car gets premium features like glass roof, ventilated seats, wireless charging, ambient lighting. Safety features include multiple airbags, automatic braking, blind-spot alert, and Tesla’s famous Dashcam and Sentry Mode.

Currently imported performance

The Model Y is currently fully imported from China, which attracts heavy taxes, about 70% import duty and a separate luxury tax. The car that costs around $45,000 in the US is available in India for around ₹ 68 lakh.

Tesla currently has no manufacturing plans in India, but it is expected that local production may start in the future. Currently, four charging stations are operational in Mumbai and preparations are underway for expansion in cities like Delhi and Gurgaon.

Price: Luxury or ambition?

Priced at ₹60-68 lakh, the car competes with luxury cars like the BMW iX1, Mercedes EQB and Kia EV6 in India. People on social media even made memes calling it “TAX‑LA”!

Although this price is beyond the budget of the common man, it is a big step for India’s EV future. Business leaders and policymakers believe that the arrival of Tesla could be a turning point – leading to new technology, better charging infrastructure and a change in people’s thinking about electric vehicles.

The way forward: EV ecosystem and India

Tesla is not just a car, but a message that India is now taking EV technology seriously. The supercharger network is being built, new dealerships are opening, and there is also increasing pressure on the government to reduce import duty.

If Tesla starts manufacturing in India, prices can come down significantly and Model Y can become an attractive option for a middle-class customer as well. At the same time, it is also a challenge for companies like Tata, Mahindra and Hyundai to improve their vehicles.

This is not just a new car for India, but a big step towards electric mobility. It’s not for everyone right now, but one thing is for sure, the Tesla Model Y has given a new impetus to the discussion about electric cars in India.
